clear, salvage, rebuild
Post Gonu, the combined efforts of institutions as well as individuals are strengthening Oman
BusinessToday reports
Qurm Beach
As the debris of an entire nation washed ashore on to its picturesque beaches, the scene at Qurm beach was no different. Wood, tyres, glass bottles...the list can go on. Trucks were called in to clear the heavy stuff, but it was the citizens, mobilised by the ministries and other authorities, as well as corporate entities, who helped in the final clean up. And once that was done, Gonu was just a bad dream.
The most popular shopping area in town was among the worst hit because of the cyclone. But the municipality as well as the managements and individual tenants of the different shopping malls pooled their resources to get the cleaning, salvage and repair work off to a strong start.
Qurm Beach Road
Ravaged by the cyclone, the beautiful Beach Road was almost unrecognisable. For most parts, there was no road. Then, the repairs began. The roads appeared again, as did the people. It will probably take more time for Qurm Beach Road to regain all the beauty and charm it offered, but the process is definitely underway.
Wadi Adai
As the cyclone hit the area, buildings
collapsed in Wadi Adai, and lives were lost. But out of the tragedy, the resolve to strengthen the infrastructure has emerged. Among the schemes anno-unced by the government to curb flooding in Muscat in the future are three dams to be built in Wadi Adai at a cost of over RO24mn.
Ghubra
Ghubra was one of the areas severely affected by the storm. The extent of the damage meant that power and water returned here much later than in most other places. However, essential services, including telecommunication facilities, were restored to normal slowly but surely. And the work was progressing rapidly to clear the roads and bring the transport network back to normal.
Ghala
Ghala, a residential as well as commercial area and home to a host of vehicle yards, was affected badly as Cyclone Gonu hit. However, rapid and coordinated intervention meant that the repair and rehabilitation effort was effective in getting the debris off the streets. And soon enough, the cars and their passengers headed back to work .
