The retail landscape has undergone a sea change in the last few months. New brands are steadily making an appearance on the horizon. Inter-national companies have realised the potential of the market and are opening shop here. The obvious destination for now is City Centre, which, after the expansion project, houses 63 new stores and several new brand names. City Centre continues to maintain its position in this year’s survey, extending its lead over its nearest competitor Lulu. The reasons are not far to seek. As of now, City Centre/Carrefour is the only shopping destination that can be called as a one-stop shop that has a mix of everything one can ask for under one roof, ranging from food and beverages, apparel, electronics, furniture and groceries.

City Centre rules

The top two positions, occupied by City Centre/Carrefour and Lulu respectively, remain the same as last year. However, in this year’s survey City Centre/ Carrefour has scored 14.12 per cent more points compared to last year. Lulu, on the other hand, has garnered ten per cent lower points.

The Gonu effect

Last year’s third runner-up Al Araimi has slipped out of the top five. One obvious explanation is its prolonged closure due to the damages caused by Cyclone Gonu in June. A similar fate seems to have struck CCC. From No 10 in 2006, CCC has hit rock bottom this year, scoring just 28 points.

New destinations

Although a majority of newcomers prefer to be located where there is maximum footfall, some want to be more discerning and be far from the madding crowd. There are some new up and coming destinations that cater to a select clientele. For example, Jawaharat A’Shatti is emerging as a popular hangout. Brands like Totem, which sells apparel and accessories for men and women, Eye Candy and Bose have opened outlets there, while Bang & Olufsen has chosen Sabco over other malls.

Lost allure

Some of the malls have sensed the shift in consumer preferences and may reposition themselves to retain their appeal. Another outcome of the competition among the retailers could be improved customer service and competitive prices.
