Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

The doors don’t open skyward, but the outrageous Gallardo is still very much a Lamborghini. Surprisingly civil, the all-wheel-drive Gallardo's V-10 has enough power and makes all the right noises. Every bit the Italian seductress with exemplary steering, brakes, and power, the Superleggera is the hard-core version of Lambo’s entry-level supercar, the Gallardo, trimmed of 126 pounds, thanks to the extensive use of superman-hard but lightweight carbon fibre. While Lamborghini was shedding weight, it added 11 horsepower to the already enormous 512 horsepower that the Gallardo makes from its 5.0-litre V-10 engine. According to Lamborghini, the power increase came from changes to the engine software and a bigger intake. Torque remains at 376 pound-feet, peaking at 4250rpm.

Dodge Challenger SRT8

Some things don’t really change. They just get faster. For anyone who came of age during the heyday of the unfettered big-cubic-inch American V-8, the feeling is deliciously familiar. Stab the throttle, and there’s that rocket sled pressure across the shoulder blades as a 6.1-litre Hemi V-8 transmits its massive thrust to the pavement, provoking smoke and shrieking from the rear tyres as they scrabble for grip. And now, as then, a big V-8 can produce some pretty impressive acceleration numbers.

Bentley Continental GT Speed

Proving there is no problem too great that horsepower can’t solve, the Bentley Continental GT Speed addresses criticism of the coupe’s porcine heft by adding 50 ponies to its twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W-12 engine. Endowed with an immense 602 horsepower, Bentley’s coupe de grâce is now capable of ferrying its four passengers past the 200-mph barrier in all the luxury of Windsor Castle

Saleen S7 Twin Turbo

The Saleen S7 Twin Turbo looks as exotic as a Le Mans race car. The looks alone might justify the US$598,950 price, but it is so beautifully made and outfitted that one overlooks the fact that the engine lurking amidships is a pushrod 16-valve Ford V-8. The engine is hardly a stock Cleveland 351. It uses an aluminum-alloy block and cylinder heads and displaces 428 cubic inches. This engine is derived from Ford’s Nascar racing programme
